Hardtner Medical Center began from the efforts of the citizens of the Olla, Tullos and Urania areas. These citizens saw a need for a modern hospital to serve the area and formed the Hospital Service District #1 of the Parish of LaSalle, State of Louisiana located in Ward 2 of said Parish. The petition to create the district was presented to the Policy Jury on May 3, 1966. The hospital was built in 1969.

Laura is a 4th generation resident of Caldwell Parish. She began practicing as a family nurse practitioner in 2008 and has spent the past 6 years working alongside her father, Dr. Russell Cummings, a board certified general surgeon from Columbia. Her role is managing illness, promoting health, and offering preventive interventions for patients of all ages. After recognizing a gap in healthcare access in her community, she also developed a successful preventive diabetic foot program that affords a much-needed service to area diabetics and those at high risk for foot complications. She obtained her doctorate in nursing from LSU in 2013 and was chosen as the top Sigma Theta Tau Honor graduate by her faculty for her work on her scholarly project. "Effective Strategies for Facilitating the Adoption of a Clinical Practice Guideline for the Diabetic Food, by Primary Care Providers". Laura and her husband, Tim Griffin, reside in Caldwell Parish, have one son, and are expecting a daughter this year (2014). They enjoy spending time with their church family, bowhunting, fishing, being on the Ouachita River, and working their Hereford cattle and American Quarter horses.

She is also the granddaughter of former Louisiana Governor John McKeithen.
